“I think my pool is leaking” is one of the calls we get most, and it’s rarely as simple as it sounds. A pool can lose water from evaporation, from a loose fitting, from a hairline crack in the shell, or from a pipe leaking underground several metres from where the water actually surfaces. Guessing wrong means paying to fix the wrong thing. Our leak detection process exists to make sure that doesn’t happen.

How We Find a Leak

We don’t start by cutting into anything. The process runs in order, and each step either confirms or rules out a possible cause before we move to the next:

  • Bucket test — a standard bucket placed on the pool step, filled to the same level as the pool, left for 24 to 48 hours. If the pool drops faster than the bucket, it’s a real leak, not just evaporation.
  • Visual inspection — checking the obvious points first: skimmer boxes, light niches, return jets, main drain, and the waterline for cracked tiles or failed grout.
  • Dye testing — a small amount of coloured dye released near suspected fittings underwater. If there’s a leak at that point, the dye gets pulled toward it, which is often visible within seconds.
  • Pressure testing the plumbing — isolating and pressurising individual pipe runs (suction, return, sometimes the backwash line separately) to identify which line is losing pressure, which narrows down whether the leak is in the shell or underground in the pipework.
  • Electronic listening equipment for underground leaks — used when pressure testing confirms a plumbing leak but the exact location under the paving or lawn still needs to be pinpointed before we dig.

Only once we’ve actually located the leak do we talk about the fix — and we explain what we found and what it means before any work starts, so you’re deciding on facts rather than a guess.

What a Leak Usually Turns Out to Be

In our experience across Pretoria East, roughly the same handful of causes account for most leaks: a cracked or loose skimmer throat, a failed light niche seal, a hairline structural crack from ground movement in older marbelite pools, or a slow underground leak on the suction or return line. Evaporation, on its own, accounts for a surprising number of “my pool is leaking” calls — Pretoria’s dry heat and wind can drop a pool level by several millimetres a day in peak summer, which feels alarming but is completely normal and not a fault with anything.

What Affects the Cost

We won’t quote a fixed leak detection price without seeing the pool, because the cost genuinely depends on a few things: how accessible the equipment and pipework are, whether the leak is in the shell or underground, how old the pool is, and whether previous repair attempts have made the fault harder to trace. What we can tell you is that a proper diagnostic visit — bucket test, visual inspection, and dye or pressure testing as needed — is far cheaper than paying to resurface or re-pipe a pool based on a guess that turns out to be wrong.

Evaporation vs a Real Leak: A Rough Rule of Thumb

Pretoria’s summer heat, low humidity and wind mean some water loss from evaporation is completely normal — typically a few millimetres a day, more on hot, windy days, and noticeably more for pools with water features or heating running, since both increase evaporation. If your pool is losing water at a rate well beyond that — a noticeable drop overnight, or needing a top-up more than once or twice a week outside of the hottest stretch of summer — that’s a reasonable trigger to book a proper bucket test rather than keep assuming it’s just the weather.

Structural Leaks vs Plumbing Leaks vs Equipment Leaks

It helps to understand that “pool leak” actually covers three quite different problems, each with its own fix. A structural leak is a crack or failure in the pool shell itself — the marbelite or fibreglass surface — usually caused by ground movement, age, or, occasionally, poor original construction. A plumbing leak is in the pipework running to and from the pool, often underground, and can be on the suction side (where the pump is drawing air, which shows up as bubbles or a struggling pump) or the return side (where pressurised water is escaping, which shows up as water loss with no visible cause). An equipment leak is at the pump, filter, valves, or their fittings — usually visible as damp patches or dripping around the pump room rather than a change in pool water level. Each type needs a different diagnostic approach, which is why we don’t jump straight to a fix before confirming which of the three we’re actually dealing with.

Why Guesswork Costs More Than Testing

The most expensive leak detection is no leak detection at all. We’ve been called in more than once after a pool was fully resurfaced to fix a leak that turned out to be a single loose skimmer fitting the whole time — the resurfacing looked good, but the pool kept losing water because nobody had confirmed where it was actually escaping from. A proper diagnostic visit costs a fraction of a full resurface, and it means whatever work follows is actually solving the problem instead of hoping it does.

Can you detect a leak without draining the pool?

In most cases, yes. Dye testing and pressure testing are both done with the pool full. Draining is sometimes needed for repairs afterward, but rarely for the detection itself.

Only as an absolute last resort, and never without discussing it with you first. Pressure testing and listening equipment are specifically there to narrow the location down so any digging is as small and targeted as possible.
